How to Clean Ears

How to Clean Ears

To prevent ear infections, it is recommended to clean your dog's ears once or twice a month. For dogs with floppy ears, cleaning can be done more often, about once a week. Start handling your dog's ears at a young age. This will make it easier to clean them. Do it gradually so that he can enjoy the moment.

Don't hesitate to use commands that he knows well, such as sit, down or stay. Also, it is often easier if a second person holds your dog or cat and speaks softly to it. Don't forget to reward your pet when everything goes well!

Here are a few guidelines:

  • Prepare the appropriate materials, including an ear cleaner designed for cats and dogs, and a soft cloth or tissue. Do not use a cotton swab, as you may injure your pet.
  • Hold the base of your dog's ear, fill the ear canal with the cleaner and massage lightly. There should be enough product that you can hear the liquid sloshing as you massage his ear.
  • Let him shake his head.
  • Use a soft cloth or a tissue to remove secretions.

If you notice discomfort, an unpleasant odour or unusual secretions, you should consult your veterinarian.

If you have any difficulties cleaning your pet's ears, do not hesitate to make an appointment with one of our technicians. Between visits, we recommend that you handle your pet's ears often.
