About Nail Caps

About Nail Caps

Nail caps are a safe alternative to declawing that allows Kitty to keep her claws while protecting you from injuries...and scratches on your furniture!

What are nail caps?

Nail caps are small plastic wrappers that cover each of the claws making them less sharp, but still functional! They are glued directly onto the freshly trimmed claw with a glue that is non-toxic to animals. Available in clear or coloured versions, there is a large selection of nail caps that you can choose to suit your preferences (or those of your cat). When properly installed, these protective caps stay in place for 4 to 6 weeks.

How do you install nail caps on you cat’s paws?

Option 1: do it yourself, at home

With a bit of patience (both from you and the cat!), nail caps can be relatively easy to put on. Here’s how to proceed:

  • Trim the cat’s nail to make sure it’s not too short, not too long – allowing the cap to stay on longer.
  • Once you’re ready to apply the cap onto the nail, fill it with glue up to about 1/3.
  • Insert the claw inside the cap and gently press on each side (as long as your cat allows it). There’s no need to hold the claw for a long time, the glue will dry almost immediately!

The excess glue may spill out of the cap, but don’t worry – this glue isn’t dangerous to your cat’s health.

Option 2: our team can help you!

Installing those caps on Kitty's paws shouldn't be a cat-astrophic experience!  If you have trouble installing them yourself or would just like a quick demonstration, our hospitals and clinics offer full installation of nail caps! Simply make an appointment with your clinic.

Are nail caps a nuisance for Kitty?

They are painless for your pet and are designed to avoid discomfort and interference with the natural extension and retraction of their claws. Kitty won't notice a difference... but our arms and furniture will!

Is there a risk if Kitty swallows a cap?

Nail guards are flexible and small - no bigger than a piece of kibble! Of course, it's best if they don't get swallowed, but if they did, it wouldn't be worrisome!
